A recent survey in England has brought some facts to light about their youth and their changing culture on sexuality. Although only about 1,600 people were surveyed, they were surveyed from all over England.
The survey asked participants to identify their own sexuality first. Then they were asked their perspective on sexuality with this question:
“Thinking about sexuality, which of the following comes closer to your view? “ The answers were...
- There is no middle ground, you are either homosexual or heterosexual
- Sexuality is a scale, it is possible to be somewhere in the middle
- Dont know
A whopping 27% of total participants felt that sexuality was a solid one way or another. But the majority of the participants understand the fluidity of sexuality
(61%).
The most interesting findings from this survey were from the young people of Great Britain. One creative question asked in the survey of heterosexual identifying people was:
“If the right person came along at the right time, do you think it is conceivable that you could have a sexual experience with a person of the same sex?”
Of the 18-24 year olds, 19% answered “very unlikely, but not impossible” and 23% said “maybe, if I really like them”. Keep in mind these are answers from heterosexual identifying young people.
Of the 25-39 year olds, only ½ said “absolutely not” leaving the remaining ½ to entertain the possibility.
The results of this survey show that the younger generation, at least those in England, are viewing sexuality as a fluid and potentially changing experience. We are lucky to have such open minded youth. If you would like to view the survey results first hand, here they are.
